Ten dead in church collapse in northern Mexico By Alfredo Pena | Associated PressCIUDAD MADERO, Mexico — The collapse of a church roof during a mass in northern Mexico has killed at least 10 people and injured 60, and searchers said Monday that no further people were believed to be trapped in the wreckage.State police had initially estimated about 100 people were inside the church in the Gulf coast city of Ciudad Madero when it collapsed during a baptism Sunday, and said that approximately 30 parishioners may have been trapped in the rubble when the roof caved in.But Tamaulipas state Gov. Américo Villarreal later said only 70 may have been inside. Villarreal said that, after sending search dogs and thermal imaging cameras under the collapsed concrete slab, it appeared that nobody was still trapped, apart from the ten bodies already recovered.“The most likely thing, I can’t affirm it 100%, is that there aren’t any more people trapped,” Villarreal said. Describing the searches by dogs and rescue teams, he s...

What does Laphonza Butler appointment mean to race for Dianne Feinstein’s vacant Senate seat? Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Sunday night appointment of Laphonza Butler to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s U.S. Senate seat potentially upends what has largely been a three-way contest that began early this year among three of the state’s Democratic congressional representatives. The selection also came with no preconditions that Butler not seek to keep the job when voters go to the polls next year to choose a senator to serve the Golden State for a full-term starting in January 2025. It wasn’t immediately clear Monday whether Butler, president since 2021 of EMILY’s List, a Washington, D.C., political organization that supports Democratic women candidates who favor abortion rights, would run to hold on to the appointed seat. She did not respond to a request for comment. In a statement on social media Monday, Butler said “I’m honored to accept Gov. Gavin Newsom’s nomination to be U.S. Senator for a state I have made my home and honored by h...

Why a US recession is still likely — and coming soon

Why a US recession is still likely — and coming soon Anna Wong and Tom Orlik | (TNS) Bloomberg NewsWhen everyone expects a soft landing, brace for impact. That’s the lesson of recent economic history — and it’s an uncomfortable one for the U.S. right now.A summer in which inflation trended lower, jobs remained plentiful and consumers kept spending has bolstered confidence — not least at the Federal Reserve — that the world’s biggest economy will avoid recession.A last-minute deal to avoid a government shutdown kicks one immediate risk a little further into the future. But a major auto strike, the resumption of student-loan repayments, and a shutdown that may yet come back after the stop-gap spending deal lapses, could easily shave a percentage point off GDP growth in the fourth quarter.Add those shocks to other powerful forces at work on the economy — from dwindling pandemic savings to soaring interest rates and now oil prices too — and the combined impact could be enough to tip the U.S. into a downturn as early as this year. Here are ...

10 questions that reveal how much you know about ageism and its costs

10 questions that reveal how much you know about ageism and its costs October 7 is Ageism Awareness Day for a good reason: Ageism is alive and well; it’s everywhere as a stereotype, prejudice and ultimately as an act of discrimination against older people, all based on age.We see it in the entertainment, tech, and greeting-card industries. It exists in our healthcare systems and within social media, medical research and among families and friends. Ageism is the most widespread and socially accepted form of prejudice, often considered normative. And that’s the problem. Many are unaware they harbor ageist attitudes towards others, themselves or support ageist policies, programs or practices.  We have federal legislation to counteract ageism in the workplace. It’s called the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) applicable to companies with 20 or more employees. The law makes it illegal to discriminate against those aged 40 and older based on their age for decisions of employment, promotion, compensation, raises, termination, training and more.  Th...
