Judge drops perjury charge for former Broward superintendent Dr. Robert Runcie The case is closed against a former Broward School’s superintendent. Dr. Robert Runcie was facing one criminal count of perjury after he was accused of lying to a grand jury. A judge Tuesday dismissed those charges against Runcie. Runcie was arrested in April of 2021 after a grand jury that was investigating operations of the school district at the time, claimed that he wasn’t truthful in preparing his testimony. Shortly after Runcie turned himself in and posted bond, he agreed to a separation agreement with the district. That agreement took effect in the summer of 2021. Runcie’s attorneys argued that the grand jury was out of scope with his indictment and said that that was not what they were there to do; they were not there to look into the superintendent. The judge agreed with his attorneys and wrote the following statement that reads, “…it is ordered and judged that the defendant’s second motion to dismiss indictment is granted. The state has ...

Lowry, Martin more than asterisks for Heat on Butler’s dominant night

Lowry, Martin more than asterisks for Heat on Butler’s dominant night For as much as Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler accomplished in capping his 56-point night with 21 fourth-quarter points in Monday’s 119-114 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, he at least was afforded a breather in that decisive final period.Kyle Lowry wasn’t. He played all 12 minutes.Caleb Martin barely was, going all but five seconds in the period.Even Duncan Robinson and Bam Adebayo played more in the fourth than Butler’s 8:11.The point being that even as Butler led, there was a support system that also had the confidence of coach Erik Spoelstra.“They had their fingerprints all over that fourth quarter,” Spoelstra said of Butler’s closing cast, as the Heat now take their 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series into Fiserv Forum for Wednesday night’s Game 5.By the numbers, Lowry’s fourth quarter was mundane, with four points, three rebounds and two assists. But his defensive feistiness proved game changing.̶...

Sudan fighting eclipses new truce as aid groups raise alarm CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese and foreigners streamed out of the capital of Khartoum and other battle zones, as fighting Tuesday shook a new three-day truce brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia. Aid agencies raised increasing alarm over the crumbling humanitarian situation in a country reliant on outside help.So far, a series of short cease-fires the past week have either failed outright or brought only intermittent lulls in the fighting that has raged between the forces of the country’s two top generals since April 15. The lulls have been enough for dramatic evacuations of hundreds of foreigners by air and land, which continued Tuesday. But they have brought no relief to millions of Sudanese caught in the crossfire, struggling to find food, shelter and medical care as explosions, gunfire and looting fighters wreck their neighborhoods. In a country where a third of the population of 46 million already needed humanitarian assistance, multiple aid agencies have had to suspend o...

Years ago he was a powerful state lawmaker, serving as speaker of the Republican-controlled House from 2001 through 2004.The investigation so far has centered on corruption at the marijuana board before it was disbanded in 2019. He said he provided at least $68,200 in cash and other benefits to Johnson, including two private flights to Canada.Johnson, 70, answered a series of questions from the judge during the hourlong hearing but wasn’t asked to explain his motive for taking bribes.
