SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- In the South Bay, thousands of city workers in San Jose could go on strike in August if a deal with the city is not reached soon. The unionized city workers have been on the job since June 30 without a new contract. Negotiations between the city and unions have broken down and now the unions are ready to ask workers if they are willing to go out on strike. Two unions, representing 4,500 San Jose city workers, have called for a strike vote on August 1.   These are workers at city facilities including libraries and the airport. The unions say that a strike could also impact emergency response times and affordable housing in San Jose.  The unions say that they have been negotiating with the city for months and are asking for competitive wages and benefits and that the city address staffing shortages. In a statement to KRON4, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said he believes workers should be fairly compensated, adding, “We are committed to continuing to ne...

Rising ocean temperatures impact California marine life

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:25:40 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Ocean temperatures in the Pacific aren’t increasing at the rates of the Atlantic right now, but scientists worry that an El Niño year will cause another marine heat wave here in California. The state’s last El Niño was from about 2014 to 2016, and the Marine Mammal Center says they are still seeing impacts. Laura Gill, public programs manager at the center, says climate change is causing food sources for seal pups to move further offshore.“That ultimately can lead to malnutrition and those younger pups washing back up on shore and beaches looking lethargic and skinny,” Gill told KRON4.Rare sightings such as gray whales swimming near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the washing up of a dead gray whale on Angel Island are also likely related to climate change, according to the center. The sea otter harassing surfers off the California coast eludes capture as her fan club grows The next El Niño is predicted for later this year and that has scientists co...

Mexico’s president offers to buy U.S. company’s coastal property for $375 million to end dispute

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:25:40 GMT

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Thursday that he has offered to buy an American company’s Caribbean coast property for about $385 million to end a bitter, years-long dispute. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said a formal offer would be presented to Alabama-based Vulcan Materials. The company operated gravel extraction pits at the Yucatan peninsula site before López Obrador’s administration closed them. The company said it had not yet received the president’s proposal or responded to the idea. In papers filed for a case before an international arbitration panel, Vulcan Materials valued the almost 6,000-acre (2,400 hectare) property, located just south of the resort town of Playa del Carmen, at $1.9 billion.López Obrador said his much lower offer was fair and based on a government assessment. He said the most attractive part of the property was the freight shipping dock, which he plans to turn into a dock for cruise ships. As the only significant port facil...

LONDON (AP) — Australia inched to 61-1 after bowling England out for 283 with Mitchell Starc taking four wickets on the opening day of the final Ashes test on Thursday.Harry Brook propelled England’s “Bazball” brigade with an 85 at The Oval, where the Aussies — having already retained the Ashes — hope to win the series outright. There were 31 fours and five sixes for the hosts though they lost wickets in costly clusters to be bowled out inside 55 overs.Australia, which has a 2-1 series lead, reached 61 for one in response to trail by 222 runs at stumps as the visitors try to become the first Australian team to win outright on English soil since 2001.Chris Woakes claimed England’s only wicket when David Warner slashed to second slip for 24. James Anderson again searched in vain for inspiration but was unthreatening in what is becoming a pattern.England’s prospects were not helped by the absence of spinner Moeen Ali, who injured his groin while batting and did not take the field. After ...

Old-school Dabo Swinney keeps Clemson on top in ACC

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:25:40 GMT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney doesn’t use the transfer portal, prefers to promote from within his staff and once said he’d quit coaching if players were paid, which has come to pass under name, image and likeness earnings. Still, the ACC’s longest-tenured coach, who critics have labeled behind the times, has stayed on top and is seeking is eighth league title in the past nine seasons and ninth overall. Swinney, starting his 15th year, credits steadiness in building a strong culture that has kept the Tigers out front of the Atlantic Coast Conference. “Football is a marathon and it’s not a sprint,” said Mickey Conn, Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator. “Sometimes, a sprint’s easy. But if you want to win and have a successful program like Dabo has built here, you’ve got to be in it for the long term.”And Swinney’s cultivated success in his own way. He brushes aside big picture issues and simplifies his program’s s...

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — It turns out playing football may not be Bryce Young’s only talent. The Carolina Panthers’ No. 1 overall draft pick wowed teammates with his rendition of Keyshia Cole’s song “Love” at the team’s annual rookie talent show on Wednesday night at Wofford College.“ He brought the house down,” Panthers offensive tackle Ickey Ekwonu said.Ekwonu was among the many who were impressed with Young’s showmanship and poise on stage in front of his new Carolina teammates.“He got everyone singing, everyone clapping and got a standing ovation,” Ekwonu said. “And he went first — that’s a lot of pressure going first. I think he killed it.”Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson said the performance was so good that he thought he was at a concert.“Bryce had a hell of a performance,” Thompson said. “… Everybody enjoyed it. He got into it. I’m trying to tell you, it was like a concert. He set the stage.”Thompson said he was “shocked” to learn Young had so much pe...

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Paula Reto had eight birdies as she carded a 7-under 64 to take a surprise first-round lead at the Évian Championship on Thursday. The 33-year-old South African holds a two-shot lead over 2015 champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand and three other players locked on 66: Frenchwoman Celine Boutier, American Alison Lee, and Thai golfer Wichanee Meechai — who recovered from a bogey and a double bogey early on.“I had so much fun,” Reto said. “The views and everything, it’s just awesome to be here. I hit some good quality shots beginning of the round and just gave myself opportunities.”Reto’s stellar round was perhaps surprising because she has only won one tournament on the LPGA Tour and has never placed higher than 18th at a major championship.“You never know out here with this golf course. Anything is possible,” Reto said. “You’ve just got to give yourself the best opportunity to make par and birdie.”Her only blemish was a bogey on ...

Jordan lawmakers move to criminalize some online speech. Rights groups accuse kingdom of censorship

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The lower house of Jordan’s parliament passed legislation Thursday to punish online speech deemed harmful to national unity, drawing accusations from human rights groups of a new crackdown on free expression in a country where censorship and repression are increasingly common. The measure makes certain online posts punishable with months of prison time and fines. These include comments “promoting, instigating, aiding, or inciting immorality,” demonstrating ”contempt for religion” or “undermining national unity.” It also punishes those who publish names or pictures of police officers online and outlaws certain methods of maintaining online anonymity. The legislation now heads to the Senate — where it is expected to pass — before going to King Abdullah II for final approval.Lawmakers have argued that the measure, which amends a 2015 cybercrime law, is necessary to punish blackmailers and online attackers. Prime Minister Bishr al-Khasawneh insisted during...

Larry Nassar survivors sue Michigan State over alleged ‘secret decisions’ on releasing documents

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Women who were sexually assaulted by former Michigan State University sports doctor Larry Nassar filed a lawsuit Thursday saying school officials made “secret decisions” about releasing documents in the case. The group of survivors and parents says the lawsuit seeks accountability — not money — from the university. They say the school refused to give the state attorney general’s office more than 6,000 documents for an investigation into how Nassar was allowed to get away with his behavior, and later wouldn’t turn over emails about the board of trustees’ decision-making. The school has said the documents are protected by attorney-client privilege.“It’s really, really hard to heal when you know there’s still answers to a lot of your questions out there,” Nassar survivor Elizabeth Maurer said at a press conference Thursday in East Lansing.Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison after he admitted to molesting some of the nation’s t...
